“His earlier work took on a blend of second and fourth watercolour eras, which later developed under the influence of modern trends from the European and Asian regions, beelining towards artistic maturity and a unique identity.
Modern Sri Lankan water colour trends mingled into existence with Sanjeewee’s work in 2010. Sanjeewee has explicated a Sri Lankan identity internationally, having emerged victorious in numerous water colour contests..” Hashini Gunasekera
Sanjeewee Senevirathna’s passion for watercolour was ignited in school through his teacher Obeysena Ranasingha, and refined by studying masters like M.D.S. Gunathilake, Alvaro Castagnet, Joseph Zbukvic, and Chien Ching Wei. This foundation laid the groundwork for his meticulous command over the medium’s technical demands.
Senevirathna’s early work focused on colonial-era Colombo landmarks, unveiled in his acclaimed 2008 solo show Reflective Landmarks at Lionel Wendt, which captured heritage architecture through stunning wet-on-wet washes and narrative depth. Beyond cityscapes, his series Urban Space (2016) pondered the human-built world—buildings, vehicles, sea and trees—reflecting our interaction with constructed environments through dynamic spatial compositional choices. Critics praise his ability to weave surreal atmospheres into everyday scenes, balancing structure and spontaneity—what he calls the fusion of the technical with the artistic.
He has held multiple solo exhibitions in Sri Lanka and abroad. Notable local shows include Reflections of Water Colors (2002), Reflective Moods (2005), and Urban Space (2016). In 2017, he curated and led the group exhibition Beyond the Water Margin at Lionel Wendt, showcasing seven contemporary Sri Lankan watercolourists and elevating the genre’s visibility. He’s also participated in international festivals, including multiple biennales organized by the International Watercolor Society.
Deeply committed to nurturing future artists, Senevirathna heads the International Watercolour Society chapter of Sri Lanka and leads the Fabriano Sri Lanka chapter. He teaches at Thriwarna Fine Arts Academy and regularly runs specialized workshops. His educational ethos combines technical precision with creative vision, mentoring students to explore individual narratives through watercolour—echoing his own journey as both practitioner and innovator.
