Sivasubramaniam Kajendran (b. 1988, Mullaitivu; currently based in Jaffna) delves into the recurring cycles of life and death through his artistic practice. Deeply influenced by his personal experiences during the Sri Lankan Civil War and the 2004 Tsunami, his work serves as a tribute to both those who survived and those who were lost. Kajendran’s art is marked by an evocative, almost spectral quality, reimagining the bond between humanity and nature in a mythical and interdependent way. He frequently reflects on themes of destruction and renewal, drawing inspiration from traditional portrayals of femininity and motherhood as symbols of power. His work also critically engages with the post-war struggles faced by women and girls, exploring their resilience, inner strength, and the hope that endures despite the fragility of life.
Kajendran holds an MFA from Beaconhouse National University, Lahore (2019), and a BFA from the University of Jaffna (2014).
His recent exhibitions include Rajiv Menon Contemporary in Los Angeles (2024), Pristine Gallery in New Delhi (2024), Aicon Contemporary in New York (2024), and the Matara Art Festival in Sri Lanka (2024). He has been awarded the UNESCO Madanjeet Singh Institute for South Asian Art Scholarship and has participated in the Cite Internationale des Arts Residency. His works are also part of the Taprobane Collection in Sri Lanka.
