“The balanced graphics with textures and unique techniques in Dixon’s compositions definitely give him a place in Sri Lanka’s avant-garde art circle. His work is strikingly different and has earned him an identity.” Shanth Fernando
Susil Gunasiri Dixon (commonly known as Susil Dixon) is a distinguished contemporary Sri Lankan artist celebrated for his refined use of color, texture, and geometric abstraction. He balances a multifaceted career as a senior art director at a leading Colombo advertising agency and as a visiting lecturer at the University of Visual and Performing Arts. His works blend the polished sheen of industrial forms—such as chrome surfaces and circular shapes—with the organic patinas of weathered walls and bark, creating a visually compelling tension between the artificial and the natural.
Dixon’s exhibitions have solidified his signature style, characterized by tonal contrasts and symmetrical compositions. One recurring motif in his paintings is the centrally balanced ball form set amidst layered circles and linear elements against rich, dark backgrounds. These motifs convey minimalist yet contemplative visual rhythms, guiding the viewer into meditative engagement through subtly calibrated color shifts and structural harmony. His most recent solo exhibition, Imperishable Shining Treasure, was inspired by the writings of Indian sage Vasugupta, a key author of the Advaita school of Hindu philosophy and yoga texts foundational to Kashmir Shaivism.
In addition to his practice, Dixon is an active founding member of the Colombo Artists? Collective, a forum established to foster creative exchange beyond formal themes or competitive pressures. His work contributes to Sri Lanka’s evolving contemporary art scene, inviting dialogue on abstraction, modernity, and the artist’s role in redefining visual narrative. Whether working solo or in collaboration, Dixon continues to explore the synergy of form, texture, and space, marking him as a key voice in modern Sri Lankan art.
